Auditory Short Term Average Energy Spectrum uses time window to smear spectral information to gain average energy This is a useful little function to get average energy from a signal once it has passed through a gammatone filter bank. See my GammaTone function on matlabcentral and also check out the middle ear transfer function.

This function gives a nice clear view of energy in each channel rather than basilar membrane motion and allows for excitation patterns to be seen at different epochs.
